This van has been configured to communicate on very high frequencies to stations 278 or more miles away. Frequencies as high as 5 times that of a cell phone are in use.
This weekend is a contest to see how well I can do. Hams can be called upon in emergencies such as ice storms, hurricanes or other disasters to help with communications. This contest, aside from being fun, is a test of our abilities to get communications running in an emergency.
I plan to make contact with NY, NJ, PA, MA, VA, and OH. In some cases I may speak with other hams as far away as Florida or California.
There is a certain amount of technical skill, and training for this particular form of radio communication. There are also hazards with high voltages and RF energy. I have been trained in these particulars and have been Licensed by the FCC with callsign KE3HT.
